Does insurance cover ADHD evaluations?
Short answer
Often, but it depends on your plan. In the US, Marketplace plans must cover mental health services, and parity law limits how much stricter mental health rules can be than medical ones, though it does not force every plan to cover mental health. Your insurer can confirm network, referral, and approval rules. In the UK, NHS assessment through a GP referral is based on clinical need, not ability to pay.
Coverage questions are worth sorting out before the first appointment, not after the bill arrives. This page explains the general rules in plain terms. It cannot tell you what your own plan covers, and it does not list prices, because those vary widely by plan, clinic, and region.
United States: what federal rules say
Three plan rules that change what you pay
Network
Referral
Some plans want a referral from your primary care provider before they will pay for a specialist visit. Ask your insurer whether your plan works this way.
Prior approval
What to ask your insurer
- Is an adult ADHD evaluation covered under my plan, and under which benefit?
- Which psychiatrists or psychologists near me are in network for adult evaluations?
- Do I need a referral from primary care first?
- Does psychological testing need prior approval, and who requests it?
- What will I owe out of pocket before and after my deductible?
Write down the date, the name of the person you spoke with, and any reference number. If the clinic later bills something unexpected, those notes help. It is also fair to ask the clinic for a written estimate before the first visit, and to ask whether the evaluation is billed as one service or as several separate parts.
United Kingdom: a different starting point
If you hold private medical insurance through work, read the policy or call the insurer: policies differ on whether they include mental health and neurodevelopmental assessments.
Whichever country you are in, keep any letters about coverage or referrals in one place. If you later need a second opinion or a review, those papers show what was approved and when, which saves you from repeating the same calls.

Will my plan cover psychological testing as part of the evaluation?
Some plans do and some require prior approval first. Ask your insurer directly, and ask the clinic whether they request approval on your behalf.
Does parity law mean every plan must cover ADHD evaluations?
No. CMS says the parity law does not require plans to cover mental health benefits. It sets rules for plans that do offer them.
Can I use an NHS GP referral and still see a private clinic?
In England, the NHS says you can ask for an NHS appointment at any clinic that provides NHS ADHD services, including some private clinics. Your GP handles the referral.
